If the thought of colored eye liner gives you a bad '80s flashback, it's time for an update. New liner formulas easier to apply, smoother going on, and more pigmented. And makeup artists say that, like a potent lipstick, a slash of bright liner is one of the easiest ways to look stylish. (Like the look below, from Derek Lam's spring 2010 show.) Here's how to give it a try:
- The least dramatic way to inch into the trend is with a thin line of pencil along your upper lashes (you can tick it up at the edges, but don't wing it out).
- For a strong, nighttime look, trace your upper and lower lids with the liner, then brush an eye shadow in the same shade over your lids. Matte shadows give a bold effect, while iridescent ones are softer.
- Keep your lips and cheeks subtle (soft pinks, peaches, and roses are the best). While you don't want the liner to be the only stitch of makeup on your face, your eyes should be the focus.
- Cobalt and midnight blue shades make the whites of your eyes look whiter, while purples (including violet and eggplant) flatter all eye colors and skin tones. Bronze is particularly pretty on fair skin, and gold on dark skin.
- Stay away from yellow, red, and orange liners. They can make your eyes look sickly.
- Pencil liners give you the most control. If you want to rim the inner lashlines, use a firm, traditional pencil. (Try Cover Girl Perfect Blend Eyeliner in Cobalt Blue or Maybelline New York Line Express Eyeliner in Bronze.) For a smudgy look, choose a kohl, which is malleable. While kohls generally tend to fade faster, Make Up For Ever Aqua Eyes and Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil make smudge-able pencils that are waterproof—seriously, they don't budge, and both come in tons of pretty shades.
- Liquids give you the thickest, most dramatic line. Those with a brush deposit the most pigment but require a steady hand. Pen versions dry faster but are less saturated. M.A.C. Liquidlast Liner comes in a bunch of gorgeous bold shades.
- Gels produce an even line and glide on more smoothly than liquids, and tend to last longer than creams. We like Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner in Violet Ink and Indigo Ink, Smashbox Jet Set Waterproof Eye Liner in Bronze, and Lancome Ink Artliner Gel Eyeliner
