Happy RAD, everyone! In honor of our little fake holiday, I’m tackling a question from a reader named Jennifer, who writes in with a problem with her hair. She says, “I can't get my almost-waist-length locks to hold curl! I love to hot-roll my hair but the spirals don't last...and I HATE hairspray and I HATE products that make my hair look greasy. Got some tips on how to help my curls stay without adding a ton of goop?”
I do, Jennifer! Now, first, I’ll assume you’ve ruled out losing some length already and get right to my suggestions. Don't worry—I've got several of 'em!
1) Don’t wash your hair for a day or two before you curl it—the natural oils in your hair will help make your locks more mold-able.
2) Try using a lightweight styling or setting lotion before you fire up the iron—not only do these products have a bit of memory built into them, but they’ll give your hair some nice grit and texture. Plus, you won’t get the crunchy results you might get if you try spraying your locks with hairspray first.
3) If you've got a little cash to spare, think about picking up a professional-grade curling iron at your closet beauty supply store. Although they're a little pricier (think $30 to $100 or more), they're also more effective. Just make sure to use a heat protecting spray beforehand so you don’t fry your strands.
And, finally, 4) Use this technique hairstylist Robert Vetica used on Rosario Dawson that I snagged from our 8 Totally DO-able Celebrity Hairstyle Tips slideshow: Pin your curls up for a couple of minutes after you make them until they cool. You might look kind of silly, but it really does help lock in the shape. Then, of course, once you take them down, give them a light misting of hairspray—I know you said you're not a fan of the stuff, but it's sort of a must in this situation!
