I have a sneaking suspicion that Selena Gomez's hair is 99.5 percent genetically gorgeous--but let's find out where that last .5 percent of total hair perfection comes from. Here's some inside scoop from the guy who styled Selena's hair for the People's Choice awards.
Los Angeles-based celebrity hairstylist Jamal Hammadi helped Selena get this cascade of sideswept shiny waves. Here's his scoop on what went down pre-show: "Selena's natural texture has wave to it, and we wanted to glam it up." When he saw her dress, he immediately decided against an updo. "I liked seeing length around her shoulders, as it balanced out the ruffles and really made Selena's gorgeous face stand out and look striking," he shares.
So here's a fun tidbit--even celebs tear out magazine photos of hairstyles they love! "Once I suggested we leave her hair down and make it Veronica Lake-ish, Selena was totally already pulling up pictures she picked out," Hammadi says. "Her photos showed sideswept hairstyles also, so there was nothing more to discuss! It was like we had studied the look together. I love when that happens."
Now here's the how-to for Selena's People's Choice hair:
For the most ease of styling, don't wash your hair the day you plan to try this!
1. Divide dry hair into 4 sections, in a pie-slice pattern.
2. Apply styling cream (Selena used Hamadi Shea Cream, which is ideal for very thick hair) first to the ends and use a 1" curling iron to create S-shaped waves (not ringlets).
2. When you're done waving the hair, set it loosely in pin curls and let cool. Then use an anti-static brush like the Hamadi Wooden Bristle Brush to sweep the hair to one side. "I pinned her hair to one side creating a very simple, chic, modern off-the-shoulder look, and Selena rocked it out," Hammadi says
