This Hair Is So Sexy, It's Making Me Blush

This Hair Is So Sexy, It's Making Me Blush: Girls in the Beauty Department: Beauty: glamour.com:

0111-zoe_saldana_hair_bd.jpg
This star has dark, shoulder-grazing hair, and when she wears it tousled-wavy and tosses it with her hands, I'm pretty sure there's no boy who could resist its gravitational pull. Can you guess which leading lady I am referring to?
The sexy-haired star I speak of is Zoe Saldana.
I've coveted Zoe's haircut before, but this new photo got me to thinking about it all over again. Her slightly mussed-up curling-iron waves are such boy bait. Doesn't this photo just make you want to go rev up your iron--or at least start thinking about doing so for Valentine's Day? Also: The way Zoe has her hand in her hair is so come-hither, but in a still-classy way. So much cuter than when stars do that stupid kissy-face at the camera! Or worse: duckface. This pic's a great reminder that just touching your hair in the right way can be such a great beauty move.

Face Primer

Face Primer: Six Good Reasons Why You Should Get Your Hands On One Pronto: Girls in the Beauty Department: Beauty: glamour.com

Face primers are relatively new in the beauty arena and for a while they made me a little doubtful about how my skin would react. I'd always wondered whether it would clog up my pores since the whole point of it is to fill in every crease and crevice, making your face smooth and ready for blush, foundation, etc. But I plunged ahead and tried a couple of the latest, brand-spankin'-new primers, and this is what I found:
First off, they don't clog up pores like I thought they would! (Phew!) The trick is to find one that that's oil-free, like the new AmazingCosmetics Anti-Aging Face Primer that just came out this month or a primer that's super light and can literally act like a moisturizing serum too, like CoverGirl & Olay's Simply Ageless Serum Primer.

It's no coinkydink that both of them have anti-aging properties either. Though they fill in lines for a face-lift effect, they stick to the surface so it doesn't invade and block up the pores. When I tried out the CoverGirl product, I felt like I was just putting on a lightweight moisturizer--it didn't leave that dreaded sticky or overly powdery feel.
I got the pros from AmazingCosmetics to help me come up with our favorite reasons why we think makeup primer should be next on your beauty shopping list. I'm SURE at least one of these will catch your eye!:
  • Smooths the skin's surface and evens out the skin tone
  • Helps to better disguise blemishes and lets you blend your concealer/makeup in more evenly
  • Makes your foundation stick around for longer (makeup pro Terri Apanesewicz used Amazing's primer on Hillary Scott on a 90+ degree photoshoot and it did not budge!)
  • Fills in fine lines and wrinkles
  • Reduces shine
  • And finally, like I said before, it doesn't clog pores!

Sexy Little Eye Makeup Idea

Have a Date This Weekend? Here's a Sexy Little Eye Makeup Idea You Can Steal From This Victoria's Secret Model : Girls in the Beauty Department: Beauty: glamour.com:
0813-marissa-miller-eyes_bd.jpg

If you're looking for a sexy, girl-next-door-meets-femme-fatale makeup idea (and who isn't?) then it's about time to break out the victory dance, ladies. Because this eye makeup look on Marisa Miller is it.

The close-up:
0813-eye-makeup-idea-close-up_bd-.jpg

Now, I'm just going to get this out of the way: I think she's wearing the same metallic eyeshadow that's on her lids in her brows. Why this is, I don't know but I feel we should ignore it and focus on the eye makeup because it's just so purdy.

And speaking of those eyes, there's just a bit of black liner surrounded by a coppery bronze eyeshadow. And because the color has a bit of a pink tone to it (but not enough to push her into zombie-land) the effect is sexy-sweet.

A Sexy, Subtle Eye Makeup Move

A Sexy, Subtle Eye Makeup Move We Should All Steal From This Victoria's Secret Model: Girls in the Beauty Department: Beauty: glamour.com

It's no surprise that I'd get my latest totally sexy eye makeup move from a Victoria's Secret model. Check out this soft, girlie little trick Lily Aldridge is going for here:

0922-victoria-secret-eye-trick_bd.jpg

She's got a little black liner on her top lids, and you can tell that she's got a little light shadow in the inner corners of her eyes (which we've seen before).

0922-victoria-secret-eye-close_bd.jpg

But there's a little twist: It's been blended out and down from her eyes a bit more than you'd usually expect to see to make her look less shadowy there. The effect: Open, glowing peepers.

A Little Trick to Making Your Cleavage Look Extra-Awesome You Can Steal from Victoria's Secret Model Marisa Miller: Girls in the Beauty Department: Beauty: glamour.com

A Little Trick to Making Your Cleavage Look Extra-Awesome You Can Steal from Victoria's Secret Model Marisa Miller: Girls in the Beauty Department: Beauty: glamour.com

1012-maria-miller-cleavage-makeup_bd.jpg
There are lots of mesmerizing things about Maris Miller, but today I want to talk about what's going on around her chest region. Come check it out.

So what's the story? She's got body shimmer in a capital "T" going across the front of her chest and down between her "girls." And there might also be a bit of bronzer on the inner side of each boob to create a shadow--that part is less clear. But, really, it's the sheen here on her skin that's making everything look a little more voluminous. Kind of like the effect I got with that cleavage kit I tried awhile back. Remember that?
Anyway, it's a simple little move, and one you may have been using for years. But it's nice to know even supermodels use those old go-to tricks, no?

The 13 Most Romantic Hair and Makeup Looks Ever

The 13 Most Romantic Hair and Makeup Looks Ever: Beauty: glamour.com:

Romantic Makeup Idea:

"Romantic Makeup Idea: “Honeysuckle” Blush

Blushing after a cute compliment from a certain special someone is nice, of course. But you could also try a swipe of the sweetest blush color ever: honeysuckle (which just so happens to be Pantone Color of the Year). It’s a reddish-pink that complements any skin tone—if you’re fair-skinned, use a lighter touch or tap your blush brush on a tissue"

Romantic Hair Idea: the Half-Up Wavy Hairstyle
Romantic Hair Idea: the Half-Up Wavy Hairstyle

A textured half ‘do like this one on Glee star Dianna Agron is great because the waves soften and frame your face and the height of the crown elongates and flatters at the same time. When copying this cute hairstyle, try using a sparkly clip or hair-color-matching bobby pins to secure the updo instead of your usual plastic claw clip

Romantic Hair Idea: a Sweet Side Bun

Romantic Hair Idea: a Sweet Side Bun

Sure, Natalie Portman has learned a thing or two about gorgeous ballerina buns from her performance in Black Swan, but if you want a romantic way to wear the look offstage, place your hair bun closer to the nape of the neck for a soft, pretty dateworthy hair idea. Pair with a swipe of black eyeliner and a bright matte lipstick for a simple and sexy look that’ll get two thumbs up

Romantic Makeup Idea: Sexy, Smudgy Eyeliner

If you’ve ever wondered what to do with that spongy thingamabob end of your eyeliner pencil, print out Amber Stevens’ eye makeup look for inspiration. For this soft but still dressed-up look, outline only the upper lash line with liner, then gently smudge up the outer half with the spongy tip of your pencil. It creates that lovely cat-eye effect without your having to keep redrawing the tricky winged edge.

Romantic Makeup Idea: Shiny Red Lips

Ah, so there is a reason red is the color of love. As in, “We looove this red lip on Rachel McAdams!” Not quite your classic red lipstick, this dark cherry color should be your next not-so-secret weapon in your heart-slaying date-night makeup armory

Romantic Makeup Idea: Flirty Green Eyeliner

Romantic Hair Idea: a Cute and Twisty Short Hairstyle

Romantic Hair Idea: a Cute and Twisty Short Hairstyle

Just when we thought it was downright impossible to turn a short pixie cut into an updo, Hayden Panettiere goes and whips out a short hairstyle that makes you seriously reconsider your sitch. Her short hair “updo” can be created by using a volumizer—like Link—to pump up a deep side part. Next, twist back the bangs on each side and secure with a couple of bobby pins. The rest is teased back for a little extra oomph. Easy-breezy to do, but the twists make it seem like there’s a lot more going on with your hair than there really is

Romantic Makeup Idea: Soft Pink Lips and Cheeks

If we had a chance to relive our prom days, we’d travel back in time clutching this picture of Selena Gomez’s beauty look (instead of our curling-iron-abused updos and piled-on makeup—shudder). With matching pale pink cheeks and lips, you can copy this romantic look for any
occasion. Just don’t forget to push your hair to the side to show off those pretty cheeks

Romantic Hair Idea: a Bumped Up Ponytail

Romantic Hair Idea: a Bumped Up Ponytail

ponytail is anything but blah when it’s all bouncy and flirty like Kate Beckinsale’s. To dupe her style, gather hair as if you’re making a high ponytail. Give it one or two twists using a claw clip to secure so it gives the ponytail extra volume and a “stacked” feel. If your hair’s not long enough to spill over the clip, pull hair back into a simple bun and tuck in some handy clip-in hair extensions like the TTony Ponytail from Avon over the top of the bun

Minka Kelly Demonstrates Your 4 Sexiest Looks

Minka Kelly Demonstrates Your 4 Sexiest Looks: Girls in the Beauty Department: Beauty: glamour.com

The star of the new movie The Roommate—and hottest Yankees fan alive—has the casual-glam thing down pat. In the March 2011 issue of Glamour, Minka Kelly shows off four ways to do that effortless sexy thing in a snap. Take a look!
01_minka-kelly-glamour-weekend-sexy_fa.jpg
Weekend Sexy: a Loose Side Braid
Don’t waste precious downtime on your hair—just copy 30-year-old Minka’s 60-second style. Make a loose side braid, then secure with an elastic or wrap a piece of your own hair around the end and pin. Pair it with a flirty pink lipstick like Clinique Vitamin C Lip Smoothie Antioxidant Lip Colour in Pink Me Up.
Sweater, Michael Kors; briefs, Marc Jacobs; necklace, James Colarusso; bracelet, Carolina Bucci; watch, Omega; ring, Scosha.

02_minka-kelly-glamour-bombshell-sexy_bd.jpg
Bombshell Sexy: Natural, Glowy Eyes and Skin
Yes, you can do va-voom makeup with a natural palette. Smudge an earthy, metallic shadow on lids and define eyes with winged liner and mascara. Try L’Oréal Paris Le Kohl Duo Shadow & Liner. Dust bronzer on your cheeks and set the whole thing off with nude lipstick. For sexy hair, use a body booster like Biolage Volumizing Whipped Mousse. Brigitte Bardot would be proud.

03_minka-kelly-glamour-girlfriend-sexy_bd.jpg
Girlfriend Sexy: Happy Coral Lips
It’s a look that hits the beauty sweet spot: Men and women love it. Slip on a bright, comfy sweater, a slouchy hat and (the key) happy coral lipstick. Look for a pinky-toned shade if you have fair or medium skin. Go with something orangey if your skin is dark.
Hat, Tommy Hilfiger; sweater, Michael Kors; sunglasses, Ray-Ban.

04_minka-kelly-glamour-date-night-sexy_fa.jpg
Date-Night Sexy: the Easiest Updo
With this hot jeans-and-dressy-top combo, who needs complicated hair? Just pull it up, pin wherever and go. To make sure all that skin you’re baring looks and feels soft, slather on a moisturizer right after you shower; we like the nicely priced Olay Silk Whimsy Body Lotion.

Bumpwatch!

Bumpwatch!: Girls in the Beauty Department: Beauty: glamour.com:

No, this post is not about with-child celebrities (I can just hear Baze breathing a sigh of relief). It's about hair "bumps," as I call them. I didn't want my "polygamist hair" post to imply I dislike high hair in general--I'm actually somewhat obsessed with it right now. And clearly, I'm not alone. Here are some of my favorite bumps-done-right:

Alas, I've yet to bump up my own head. Maybe I'll try one for my friend Kim's wedding, since she'll be rocking that side-bun-with-bump I recently showed you guys. Which bump do you guys like best?

4 Fab Alternatives to Getting A Brazilian Blowout

4 Fab Alternatives to Getting A Brazilian Blowout: Girls in the Beauty Department: Beauty: glamour.com

I don't know about you guys, but it seems like every gal I know either has (or is talking about getting) a Brazilian blowout. The only problem is that it can be kinda pricey (usually between $150-$600 depending on where you go). So, before you shell out all that money, try these easy at-home alternatives first!
0803_BrazilianBlowOutAlternatives_bd.jpg
OK confession: I received the Brazilian blowout last summer and I swear that it changed my life in that I never really thought that it would be possible to ever have frizz free hair for so long. However, I decided not to get one this summer and instead added these products (and practices!) into my hair routine. Luckily, they've been giving me the same kind of effect as the Brazilian blowout...minus the price tag of course. Hurrah!
0803-AvonLotusShield_bd.jpg
1. Avon Advance Techniques Frizz Control Lotus Shield ($10)
Out of all the frizz free hair products I've tried recently, this one is my fave! It's a leave-in hair treatment that you apply to your hair while wet after washing and then just style as normal. Regardless of whether you use heat on your hair when styling, it forms a barrier around your hair to repel moisture. The best part is that you don't have to keep re-applying: it stays in your hair for up to three days even if you wash it! It's a lazy gal's dream!
0803_NeilGeorgeOil_bd.jpg
2. Neil George Indian Gooseberry Oil ($42)
Alright, I know it's a bit pricey and it sounds like it would be extremely heavy (and weird!) to put oil on your hair. But, my fine curly hair happens to attract frizz while I'm hanging out at the pool or beach. So, colorist Amanda George from the Neil George Salon suggested that I dampen my hair first and then apply the oil. When you do get in the water, the oil creates a barrier on your tresses keeping it moist so as you sunbathe your hair won't turn into a frizz ball. Another great (yet cheaper) alternative is the Carol's Daughter Khoret Amen Hair Oil.
3. My Cream/Hairspray Cocktail
Here's a little trick that I picked up while hanging out backstage and chatting with hairstylists during the Fall 2010 shows of Fashion Week: squeeze out some anti-frizz hair cream (I love Pantene's Curly Hair Style Anti-Frizz Creme) into your hand; spray a bit of hairspray on top of it (my pick is Bumble and Bumble's Spray De Mode); rub hands together and then distribute throughout hair, focusing mostly on ends. The cream works to smooth your strands and the hairspray helps to keep the frizz out.
3. Cold Water (free! well, unless you have to pay a water bill that is...)
Before jumping out the shower, rinse your hair in cold water for about 5 minutes. It seals your hair cuticle and cuts down on fly aways making your hair appear instantly smoother after you style. Easy!

A Hairstyle For Days When You Feel Like Giving Up: The Braided Pony: Girls in the Beauty Department: Beauty: glamour.com

A Hairstyle For Days When You Feel Like Giving Up: The Braided Pony: Girls in the Beauty Department: Beauty: glamour.com

It's pretty safe to say that braids are to this beauty blog what weather is to the rest of the world: We like to talk about it--All. Of. The. Time. Recently we've chatted about big braids, grown-up braids, weekend braids--you know the drill. But before you get burned out on braided hairstyles, consider this crazy-easy, crazy-cute 'do:
0222_prettybraid_bd.jpg
If this picture looks like some strange, stalker-ish iPhone photo, that's because it is. I took it last week, while I was waiting for the Ralph Lauren show to start. I was too shy--and too far away--to ask this cute show go-er about her 'do, but it seems pretty straightforward: It looks like she pulled the front half of her hair back, teased and fluffed the center section a bit to get some volume, then braided the center and side sections two or three times then swooped the bottom half of her hair up and gathered all of the sections into a thick, kicky ponytail. I especially love the fact that the braided texture in the back glams the whole thing up a little, so her less-than-perfect ends look exactly right.
Not bad, right? My hair is so thick that I might need to jab a few bobby pins in there to keep things in place but other than that it's pretty stress-free--an attribute I really like in my hairstyles. You like? Have you tried something like this before? Think you would?

Brace Yourself: The Ponytail to End All Ponytails: Girls in the Beauty Department: Beauty: glamour.com

Brace Yourself: The Ponytail to End All Ponytails: Girls in the Beauty Department: Beauty: glamour.com

Ladies, if you start hearing dreamy, Walt Disney-esque music in the background or start seeing rainbows and shooting stars bursting out of your computer screen when you look at these photos of the hairstyles at yesterday's Louis Vuitton runway show, don't stress and dial up your doc: You're not going crazy--you've just fallen in love (hard) with these picture-perfect ponytails.
Behold, the flawless ponytails:
0310-louis-vuitton-ponytail_bd.jpg
It's pretty, preppy, sporty--and a little prissy, but in a good way I think; it's pretty much the hairstyle equivalent to a cable twinset.
It's a little shocking how perfect it is, right? Kind of like looking at the Hope Diamond or something. Seriously though, while you might not wear a '50s Barbie-esque 'do like this into the office or out on a date, you have to respect the fact that there are absolutely zero frizzies. That alone deserves some kind of an award.
Here it is again from the back:
0311_vuitton-fall-2010-hair-back_bd.jpg
It should come as no surprise that this immaculate hairstyle comes from Redken's Guido, he of the spring side-braid phenomenon. For all you vintage hair lovers--or anyone who wants to glam-up their gym pony one day--we got the dish on how to re-create this 'do:
1. After washing hair, apply texturizing blow dry gel to damp hair.
2. Brush through from roots to ends with a round brush.
3. Pin hair into rollers and let cool.*
4. Pull hair into a smooth ponytail right (no part) and secure with an elastic.
5. Wrap a 1 to 2" piece of hair around the elastic and secure underneath the ponytail with bobby pins to conceal the elastic.
6. Around the hairline, apply a smoothing serum like Redken's Glass 01 and make sure all baby hairs are down for a smooth, sleek look.**
(*If you're in a hurry, you could probably blow dry, slick back, pin up and then use a wide-barrel curling iron to give one or two big curls to the end of the 'tail. **Spritzing the smoothing serum on a little comb then brushing through will help prevent stiff helmet head.)

One Good Reason Not To Resort To A Ponytail This Morning

One Good Reason Not To Resort To A Ponytail This Morning: Girls in the Beauty Department: Beauty: glamour.com'

I know, I know: ponytails and Mondays were basically invented with one another in mind. And we've shown you a few easy ways (one, two, three) to jazz up a basic pony lately. However, here's an unponytail that's just as easy to pull together--even on a clumsy, rushed Monday morning.
Check out this pretty front-twisted hairstyle on sunshiney "Glee" star Dianna Agron.
0315-dianna_agron_bd.jpg
Pretty, right? And it's so low-effort. All you have to do is part your hair far to one side--out by the outer corner of your eye--and twist and pin the other side just above your ear.

An Easy, Basic Half-Up Hairstyle That Makes You Look All Romantic and Pretty and Stuff: Girls in the Beauty Department: Beauty: glamour.com

An Easy, Basic Half-Up Hairstyle That Makes You Look All Romantic and Pretty and Stuff: Girls in the Beauty Department: Beauty: glamour.com

Ah, the old hair standbys. You know, those hairstyles that stick around year after year because they're easy, flattering and generally adorable like this little half-up hairstyle on Glee's Dianna Agron:
0816-dianna-agron-hairstyle_bd.jpg0816-dianna-agron-hairstyle-back_bd.jpg
Her hair is curled and then pulled back in the front with lots of volume. So, so simple but so well-balanced--the height keeps her from looking too young and the curls keep the whole thing soft.
To do: Tease your hair in the front, pull it back to the crown of your head and then push it forward to create a "pouf" before catching it in a hair clip. And done.
